On October 29, 2024, the PANJIT meeting room was filled with laughter and moments of recognition — the kind where people say, “That’s exactly how I feel too!” PANJIT invited Consulting Psychologist Fu Hung-Yi from Kuan-Hsin Psychological Therapy Center to lead a session on bridging generational gaps. More than a communication workshop, it was an experience in understanding, empathy, and connection.
Communication Starts with Listening, Not Talking
According to Psychologist Fu, the biggest challenge between generations isn’t language — it’s power dynamics. Power can come from hierarchy, experience, or even long-standing habits within an organization.
He emphasized that power is a double-edged sword:
• When used well, it promotes efficiency and the sharing of experience.
• When overused, it can limit empathy and make communication rigid.
Three Practical Ways to Connect Across Generations
Fu shared three practical approaches for improving communication in the workplace:
1. Challenge assumptions — Avoid labeling others or dismissing their ideas too quickly.
2. Stay curious — Start from shared values to find common ground.
3. Use the “sandwich method” — Begin with empathy, discuss the issue, and end with encouragement.
These simple practices can help turn misunderstandings into opportunities for connection — making “I’d love to hear your thoughts” the start of every meaningful conversation.
Listening in Action
Fu concluded by reminding everyone that real influence doesn’t come from saying “we need to communicate” — it comes from actually listening and acting on what we hear.
When we let go of our assumptions, open our ears, and seek to understand the values and motivations behind others’ perspectives, generational differences can become catalysts for growth rather than barriers.
PANJIT will continue to promote learning experiences that build a connected and understanding workplace — one where every generation feels heard, respected, and valued. Together, we’re shaping a more inclusive and innovative company culture.
